Short Nose

A short nose, also known as a hypoplastic nose or short columella, generally refers to a nose that is shorter in length compared to the ideal proportions for a person's facial structure. It can appear stubby or underdeveloped, often with a reduced nasal bridge and less projection of the nasal tip.

A short nose could also be an upturned nose, also known as a "celestial" or "scooped" nose, characterised by a nasal tip that points upward, giving the appearance of a nose that is rotated higher than normal. This can result in a more pronounced nostril view and a shorter appearance to the nose, especially from a profile view.

The same attribute applies to a pixie nose and a pug nose. A pixie nose typically refers to a nose with a small, upturned tip, resembling the nose of a pixie or fairy. It often implies a cute or diminutive appearance, but can also suggest a nose that is shorter and upturned. A pug nose is similar to an upturned nose but often more exaggerated in its upward tilt, resembling the nose of a pug dog. It tends to have a very short nasal bridge and a highly upturned tip, giving it a distinctive appearance.

While these terms may overlap in describing noses that are shorter or upturned to varying degrees, each term may carry slightly different connotations based on the specific characteristics of the nose being described. It is important to consider these nuances when discussing nasal anatomy or considering cosmetic surgery options.

Fix It

Caudal Septal Extension Grafting

Caudal septal extension grafting involves attaching a strong straight piece of cartilage to the end of the nasal septum to elongate it. This cartilage, typically harvested from the nasal septum or rib, provides structural support and extends into the tip cartilages (medial crura) to create a stable base. It is used to enhance nasal projection and refine the nasal tip shape in rhinoplasty procedures.

Columellar Strut Graft

Columellar Strut Graft is a common surgical technique used to provide structural support and stabilisation to the nasal tip. Typically harvested from the patient's own septal cartilage, the strut graft is shaped and placed along the columella, the strip of tissue between the nostrils. This graft reinforces the nasal tip, helping to maintain projection and prevent post-operative drooping. Columellar strut grafts are instrumental in achieving both functional improvement in nasal breathing and aesthetic refinement in nasal tip contour during rhinoplasty procedures.

Extended Spreader Grafts

Extended Spreader Grafts are small horizontal strips of cartilage that are sewn onto the top of the septum for both functional and cosmetic reasons. An extended spreader graft extends from the middle of the nose down to the tip, aiding in nasal lengthening, de-rotation of the tip, and securing it firmly in place.
