Rhinophyma

Rhinophyma is a disfiguring nasal condition characterised by the abnormal growth and proliferation of sebaceous glands and underlying connective tissue. This leads to thickening and enlargement of the nasal skin, resulting in a bulbous appearance or disfigurement of the nose. It is associated with rosacea, a chronic inflammatory disorder of the face. The exact cause of rosacea and rhinophyma is not fully understood but involves genetic factors and environmental triggers.

Diagnosis of rhinophyma is typically based on clinical examination. Treatment options include medical therapy such as topical creams and oral antibiotics to reduce inflammation, but surgery is normally the only treatment to provide substantial benefits and a chance of cure.

Dr Naveed Basheeth performs surgical excision, coblation, laser ablation or dermabrasion to all his patients depending on each of their conditions, needs and anatomy.

These procedures typically involve shaving, or in the case of CO2 laser treatment, ablating the thickened tissue with or without immediate resurfacing (which may involve skin grafts or flaps). When some of the sebaceous glands are preserved during treatment, new skin can regenerate naturally, reducing the need for additional skin grafts or flaps.

The razor blade excision technique is a precision surgical method used to remove excess tissue and reshape the nose affected by rhinophyma. A sharp razor blade or scalpel is used to carefully excise or shave off the thickened and irregular tissue on the nose. Layers of excess skin, sebaceous glands, and connective tissue are meticulously removed to reshape the nasal contours. This technique aims to minimise scarring and preserve as much healthy tissue as possible.
