Salivary Glands

Parotitis

Parotitis is a swollen parotid gland; the medical condition is caused by one or more of the following: viral infections such as mumps, bacterial infections, auto immune conditions or obstruction. Adults and the elderly are commonly affected by a parotid gland infection and is often associated with another illness such as the flu or pneumonia. Children are more prone to mumps or viral acute parotitis although its numbers have reduced since the use of MMR vaccine.

Symptoms include painful swelling in front of the ears or under the jaw, fever or pain especially when eating or drinking.

A thorough physical examination is required to check for swelling and tenderness. An ultrasound or CT scan can assess the glands. Treatment options include antibiotics for bacterial infections, pain management and hydration. Recalcitrant and recurrent parotitis can be efficiently managed by sialendoscopy.
