Parotidectomy refers to the surgical removal of all or part of the parotid gland. This procedure is primarily used to treat patients with parotid gland tumours or recurrent infections. The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia, ensuring the patient is unconscious throughout. An incision is made in front of the ear along a natural skin crease, extending either upward into the neck or behind the ear. The tumour is carefully separated from the branches of the facial nerve. Following the procedure, a small plastic drain is inserted, which is typically removed two days later. The incision is closed using dissolvable sutures placed deep within the skin. Dr Basheeth, with his expertise in facial plastics, prefers to perform facelift incisions for amenable tumours with flaps to have better cosmetic and oncological outcome.
