Otoplasty
Otoplasty (also known as ear surgery or ear pinning) is a procedure designed to alter the shape of the outer ears, typically to reduce prominence. It can also address ear size reduction and correct other ear abnormalities.
What it Does ...
The most common reason for otoplasty is to set prominent ears closer to the head, creating a more natural appearance.
Approximately 5% of the population has protruding ears, which can be a source of teasing, especially in children. While the operation is commonly performed around the age of 5–6 years for children, many adults also seek this surgery, with similarly reliable cosmetic outcomes.

Otoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia for children and may use local anaesthesia with sedation for adults. The surgery typically takes two to three hours.
An initial consultation with a facial plastic surgeon is done to discuss goals, evaluate ear structure, and determine the best approach. The procedure involves incisions being made discreetly behind the ear within its natural folds. Cartilage and skin may be removed as needed, and the underlying cartilage is removed, reshaped or repositioned using permanent sutures. Fine sutures close the incisions, and soft dressings are applied to cushion the ears; these remain in place for a few days.
The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis, and patients are advised to wear a head bandage for three days following surgery. Patients can expect some discomfort which can be managed with prescribed pain medications as needed.
Most individuals can resume normal activities within five to ten days after the procedure, although strenuous activities and contact sports should be avoided for several weeks. Otoplasty provides permanent results once the ears have healed, with improvements in both appearance and self-confidence.
