Surgeries for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA)
Lingual Tonsillectomy
This surgical procedure aims at removing the lingual tonsils, which are lymphoid tissues located at the base of the tongue. It is typically performed to alleviate symptoms like OSA, dysphagia , or persistent throat discomfort. Lingual tonsillectomy involves carefully removing excess tissue to improve airway clearance and reduce obstruction. Recovery generally involves a period of rest and careful monitoring for potential complications such as bleeding or infection, with follow-up appointments to assess healing and ensure optimal outcomes.
During the procedure, the patient is usually under general anaesthesia, and the surgeon accesses the lingual tonsils either through the mouth or using a minimally invasive technique such as transoral robotic surgery (TORS). TORS, specifically for sleep apnoea, is a relatively newer surgical technique aimed at treating OSA by addressing the anatomy of the upper airway, particularly the tongue base and the soft palate. Dr Basheeth performs TORS for various throat conditions, cancer and sleep apnoea as well.
