Surgeries for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA)
Hyoid Suspension
Hyoid suspension involves repositioning and securing the hyoid bone to stabilise and open the upper airway. The hyoid bone is a U-shaped bone located in the neck just above the thyroid cartilage (Adam's apple). It plays a crucial role in supporting the muscles of the tongue and the upper airway.
Advancement genioplasty with hyoid suspension is a comprehensive approach to address anatomical factors contributing to OSA and other SRBD. The surgeon makes an incision in the neck to access the hyoid bone. The bone may be repositioned and fixed in a more forward position, which helps to prevent it from collapsing backward during sleep. This helps to maintain the patency (openness) of the upper airway.
