Cysts
Cysts are fluid-filled collections in the thyroid gland and its occurrence is quite common. More often than not, they can be present without causing noticeable symptoms to the patient, but occasionally they may grow large enough to be felt as a lump in the neck. Diagnosis of thyroid cysts typically involves ultrasound imaging. Additionally, fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy is used to confirm the diagnosis and to remove fluid from the cyst. If the cyst persists despite two or more attempts at aspiration, surgical removal of the affected thyroid lobe (lobectomy) may be necessary.
