Salivary Gland Disorders
Autoimmune Salivary Gland Disorders
Sjögren's syndrome: This chronic autoimmune disorder primarily affects the salivary glands and other moisture-producing glands (e.g. tear glands), leading to symptoms such as dry mouth, dry eyes and arthritia. A clinical evaluation based on symptoms and medical history followed by blood tests for specific autoantibodies (e.g. anti-SSA/Ro and anti-SSB/La antibodies); and possibly a lip biopsy can help confirm glandular involvement.
Another recognised autoimmune condition affecting these glands is IgG4 Sialadenitis which can be managed using sialendoscopy and immunotherapy.
